Paul McNeil Jr. Drains Four Threes, Scores 16 in NC State’s Season-Opening Rout
Former Richmond Raiders guard and Rockingham native Paul McNeil Jr. wasted little time making his mark as the NC State Wolfpack opened their 2025–26 campaign with a dominant 114–66 home win over the North Carolina Central Eagles Monday night.
McNeil started the game and logged 27 minutes, one of the highest on the squad.
He posted 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and pulled down three rebounds.
From the outset, he injected energy into the Wolfpack’s attack. His four triples were part of a collective barrage — NC State knocked down 19 threes on the night, tying a program/arena record.
His role extended beyond the stat line. Playing as a starter in a loaded lineup, McNeil’s floor spacing helped a team that shot 47.5 % from deep and 57.8 % overall (37-64) in the game. Even with veterans such as Darrion Williams (19 points) and Tre Holloman and Quadir Copeland (15 each) leading the way, McNeil’s emergence adds another dimension to the Wolfpack’s offensive arsenal.
For McNeil, whose freshman season averaged just 4.2 points per game, this performance suggests a clear step up. His increased role and opportunity to start indicate the coaching staff believes he can contribute at a higher level this season.
While his efficiency stood out, the next challenge will be broadening his impact. Rebounding, defense, and playmaking remain areas where McNeil can grow to become a more complete player within the rotation.
